Mohammed Ben Sulayem cleared by FIA

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been cleared of all issues brought against him regarding his involvement in the 2023 Saudi Arabian and Las Vegas Grands Prix following an investigation by the FIA Ethics Committee.

The committee found “no evidence to substantiate allegations of interference” by Ben Sulayem, effectively absolving him of any culpability in the events surrounding the two races.

Specifically, the allegations centered on Ben Sulayem’s purported interference in decisions related to Fernando Alonso’s penalty at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and his involvement in the certification process for the Las Vegas Grand Prix circuit.

In the case of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, concerns were raised over Alonso’s penalty, which was later reversed upon appeal by Aston Martin. Ben Sulayem’s alleged involvement in this matter was thoroughly scrutinized during the investigation.

Additionally, questions were raised regarding Ben Sulayem’s role in the certification process for the Las Vegas Grand Prix circuit. Despite concerns about the readiness of the circuit, Ben Sulayem supported its certification, citing safety considerations for drivers and personnel.

The FIA Ethics Committee’s investigation was prompted by concerns raised earlier in March, but ultimately, the committee found the allegations against Ben Sulayem to be unsubstantiated.

Sulayem’s cooperation with the process and eventual exoneration reaffirms his commitment to upholding integrity within the sport and gives fans a glimpse into the thoroughness of the FIA’s investigative process.

The decision is coming amidst ongoing scrutiny surrounding the governance and decision-making processes within Formula 1, further extolling the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability within the sport.

As FIA President, Ben Sulayem plays a pivotal role in ensuring the fair and impartial administration of Formula 1 and other motorsport events. His clearance of any wrongdoing in these instances serves to uphold the integrity of the sport and reinforce confidence in its regulatory framework.
