Johnson Climbs Back To Number One After Winning Northern Trust

Dustin Johnson led the final leaderboard at the Northern Trust by 11 shots, finishing at 30 under overall as he made 8-under 63 on the final day, earning him victory at the event and shooting him back to world number one. Harris English came second with 19 under while Daniel Berger finished with 18 under to end up at 3rd place.

Johnson began the day with a five-shot lead and it looked like the round was his to win from the beginning. He made an eagle three at the second hole then went on to score four birdies between the fourth and eighth hole, further widening his lead. The American put in six pars along the way before making a birdie at the 12th hole.

That was when everything went dark, literally as a storm forced the game to a halt, keeping Johnson 2 shots away from claiming victory. By the time the storm blew over more than an hour later, it was almost dark but Johnson still managed to seal his victory with a birdie to win the event, his second history of the year. One remarkable thing about his Sunday round was that it was absolutely bogey free.

By winning the tournament, Johnson becomes the fifth person this year to hold the position of number one on the Official World Golf Ranking and he said he’d “like to stay there for a little while.” The is not his first time at that position as he occupied it till May 2019. As per the tournament, Johnson could not have had it better as even he admitted that he “played really solid all four days this week.”

He begin the tournament on a high note, finishing at under 67 on day one. He also achieved another record as the third player in the history of the PGA Tour to finish an event at 30-under. He was one shot behind achieving a feat set by Ernie Els in 2003 when he finished at 31-under.

Johnson currently leads the FedEx Cup Standings and hopes to win the event this year, stating that he had come close to it many times in the past but was determined to go for gold this time around.
