Fitzpatrick beats Speith to win RBC Heritage Title

    April 18, 2023

Matt Fitzpatrick, US Open champion, won the $20m RBC Heritage title in South Carolina after a dramatic playoff with Jordan Spieth. The tournament was held at the Harbour Town golf links, a location where Fitzpatrick used to holiday with his family as a child. He told Sky Sports that this was the tournament he had always dreamed of winning.

Fitzpatrick, who missed promising birdie putts on the last two holes, finished the tournament with a three-under 68, drawing level with Spieth on 17 under. Spieth missed putts to win on the first two playoff holes, and Fitzpatrick birdied the third to secure his victory. Fitzpatrick had led Spieth by two shots at the start of the final round, but Spieth started strong, with four birdies in the first six holes, leveling with the Englishman on 16 under.

Spieth, who won the tournament last year in a playoff against compatriot Patrick Cantlay, was not able to repeat his feat. Fitzpatrick’s victory in the tournament was especially meaningful for him, as he used the same club – a nine-iron – to hit his approach to the final green that he used to win the US Open.

Other notable performances in the tournament included Masters champion Jon Rahm’s score of 68, which left him finishing the tournament on 11 under, along with England’s Tommy Fleetwood, who shot a 71. England’s Tyrrell Hatton impressed with a 66, leaving him at 10 under, while compatriot Justin Rose hit a 70, finishing the tournament on nine under.

After the tournament, Fitzpatrick spoke about how special it was to win the RBC Heritage title. He expressed his gratitude for his career, which he feels has been very lucky, having now won a major and this tournament. Fitzpatrick’s win is a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport, and it will undoubtedly inspire aspiring golfers all over the world.
