Tottenham signs former Chelsea player on loan

    January 10, 2024

Despite playing just 8 games and scoring two goals for RB Leipzig in the German Bundesliga this season, former Chelsea winger Timo Werner will spend the rest of the season at North London club Tottenham.

This is after they completed an agreement to bring the German International back to the Premier League on a loan deal till the end of the season. The 27-year-old is expected to fill the void left by the absence of South Korean forward Son Heung-Min, who has travelled for the Asian football cup.

Son Heung-Min has scored 12 goals and made five assists in 20 Premier League games this season; his absence and the injury to James Maddison forced Lilly white to bring Timo Werner into the team.

However, the deal has an option to become permanent if Tottenham are impressed enough to trigger that at the end of the season. Timo Werner began his career at Stuttgart before joining RB Leipzig in 2016. He also has Premier League experience with Chelsea after his 2020 move to London in a £45m de from Bundesliga club Leipzig.

He played 89 appearances for Chelsea and scored 23 goals, winning the Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup, before returning to Leipzig in 2022. Werner revealed that the discussion he held with the Tottenham manager helped inform his decision to move.

“I spoke with the [Spurs] manager [Ange Postecoglou], and it was a really good talk. He gave me straight away the feeling of what I needed to join a club and what I wanted to feel when I talked to a manager. Also, tactics and style, how he wants to play. For me, I thought straight away that it fits perfectly. I hope I can be the best player I can be here. I can play every position up front – that’s one of my strengths. My aim is to fight for another win in this league and also maybe for titles.” Werner said.
