Kieran Tierney says Scotland needs believe to secure favorable result in Spain

    October 12, 2023

Scotland defender Kieran Tierney has revealed that the Scottish national team needs to believe ahead of Thursday’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Spain in Seville. The Scotts need to avoid defeat or hope Norway doesn’t win against Cyprus to secure qualification for the championships happening in Germany next year.

Scotland won the first leg at Hampden Park with a 2-0 win courtesy of a brace from Scot McTominay. They have also gone on to beat every other team in group A to seal fifteen points from five games and six points gap between themselves and nearest challengers Spain, who are on nine points.

A victory in Spain is a huge task as the Scots have not won away at Spain since 1975, and their winning streak recently stopped in a 3-1 loss to England in a friendly last month. However, Tierney, whatever the friendly result, is not important but rather the readiness and preparedness, which is why they are organized, stating that the team can do their best, believing they win in Seville.

“We believe we can go out there and do our best. I think you need to. What’s the point in going into a game believing you’ve got no chance? It’ll be a tough game, there’s no doubt about it – a world-class team away from home, and they need to keep winning to go through. Everyone wants to top the group, so it’s a game both teams want to do really well in. Belief is a big thing in football, and it’s the same as Spain at home for us – tough, but it’s the same team. It’s a game nobody fancies us in except for the Scotland fans and the people in the changing room.” Tierney said.

Tierney won’t be playing in the game after suffering an injury at Spanish club Real Sociedad, which has seen him miss the club’s last two games.
