Atletico Madrid Continues Winning Streak at Home

    October 31, 2023

Atletico Madrid’s remarkable home dominance continued as they secured their 14th consecutive La Liga victory at the Metropolitano Stadium, defeating Alaves 2-1. This remarkable feat tied Atletico’s longest-winning home streak, achieved a decade ago. During this stunning run, Alvaro Morata remained a key figure, netting his seventh goal in as many games for Atletico.

Diego Simeone’s side equaled their previous 14-match home winning streak, achieved between May 2012 and February 2013 while playing at the Vicente Calderon Stadium. The Metropolitano has become a fortress for Atletico, and the team’s current success at home is no coincidence.

“It’s no coincidence that we’ve achieved this streak at home, where our fans make us feel stronger and more comfortable,” said Rodrigo Riquelme, who also found the back of the net for Atletico in Sunday’s match.

This latest victory propelled Atletico to third place in the La Liga standings with 25 points, just three behind both Girona and Real Madrid. Real Madrid recently emerged victorious in the season’s first “clasico,” defeating Barcelona 2-1, while Girona secured a 1-0 win against Celta Vigo on Friday.

Atletico holds a game in hand due to the suspension of a home match against Sevilla in September because of adverse weather conditions.

Simeone, coaching his 450th league game for Atletico, has now managed more matches for a single club than any other manager in the league.

Atletico has a formidable record against Alaves, winning nine of their last 11 league encounters. In contrast, Alaves remains in 17th place, narrowly escaping the relegation zone, with a seven-game winless streak, including four losses and three draws.

Riquelme opened the scoring for Atletico in the 26th minute, and Morata extended his remarkable scoring streak during first-half stoppage time. Alaves managed to pull a goal back in deep second-half stoppage time through Ander Guevara.

Atletico still had several injured players, including Samuel Lino, Thomas Lemar, Memphis Depay, and Reinaldo.

In their next league fixture, Atletico will visit Las Palmas, while Alaves will host last-place Almeria. Alaves will first face Deportivo Murcia in the Copa del Rey.

Elsewhere in La Liga, Athletic Bilbao fought back to secure a 2-2 draw with Valencia, while Real Betis edged Osasuna 2-1, thanks to Isco’s late goal.

Atletico Madrid’s home supremacy, highlighted by Alvaro Morata’s remarkable form, continues to be a defining factor in their La Liga campaign. As the season unfolds, fans can expect more thrilling encounters and exceptional performances from the team.
