AFCON-bound star signs Premier League contract extension

Tottenham’s Senegalese Midfielder Pape Matar Sarr has signed a contract extension at the North London club with a new six-and-a-half-year contract.

The 21-year-old has played 18 games for Ange Postecoglu’s side this season as they started the season in an impeccable form. The player who has 18 senior caps for Senegal will stay at the White Hart Lane till at least 2030.

Sarr has two goals and two assists in 18 Premier League matches for Tottenham this season, which has earned him a call-up to Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations squad for this January’s AFCON in Ivory Coast.

However, his Africa Cup of Nations journey was put in balance after the midfielder was substituted in Tottenham’s 3-1 win over the weekend. Sarr scored the opening goal of the game in the ninth minute, but he was substituted halfway into the first half due to an injury.

“Pape felt his hamstring, and he’s emotional because he wants to go away with his national team. It’s a big tournament for them. It’s kind of the way our season has gone. He was so good again early in the game, apart from his goal, and then he got an injury. Disappointing for him, but I am hoping it is not too serious and he can still go away and contribute to his country. “It has been a constant for us. I’m disappointed for Pape [Matar Sarr]; I’m not fully sure about the extent yet. It’s a hamstring, he’s gutted. We’ll have to let others step up,” Postecoglou said.

Tottenham have recovered from a dip in form and managed to crawl their way back to the upper part of the table where they currently sit in fifth position, three points behind second-place Aston Villa and just one behind Arsenal and Manchester City in fourth and third perspectively.
